Kickboxing trial class in Weesp: what your first class looks like
Remy & Kev
Booking a trial class takes two minutes. Still, most people put it off for weeks, and that’s rarely because of their schedule. It’s all in your head: what if I’m the only beginner, what if everyone there already knows how to fight, what if I run out of steam within five minutes. So here’s exactly what happens between walking in and biking home. With no surprises, getting started is a whole lot easier.
Step 1: You book a class
You book your 1st free trial class by giving us your name, email address, and phone number. Together, we’ll find a suitable bag work class on the schedule. We sign you up for that time, and that’s it, the trainer knows you’re coming.
There are morning and evening classes, plus separate kids classes. The first step really is the hardest, and you can take it from your couch.
Step 2: Head to the gym
Put on the kind of workout clothes you’d wear for a run, grab an old towel (one that can go on the floor), and bring a bottle of water. That’s all the prep you need.
We have gloves and shin guards ready for you to borrow, and you’ll train barefoot. Buying your own gear comes later. Our gear guide explains how to do that without wasting money.
De Vechtclub is located at Achtergracht 66A, 1381 BP Weesp. Our members' entrance is on the parking deck above Albert Heijn. Once upstairs, walk past the AH shopping carts and you'll see our door. Coming by car? Navigate to Van der Linden Tweewielers. The ramp to the parking deck is just to the right of their bike shop, and parking is free for 90 minutes. Coming by bike? Use the bike racks out front on Achtergracht. Bikes on the deck are for trainers only. On foot, you can reach the parking deck through the stairwell, except before 8:00. The Albert Heijn parking deck door is still closed then, so take the Vomar escalator instead. Welcome!
We’re right in the heart of Weesp, so most locals can walk or bike here in a few minutes. Easy to combine with dropping the kids off at school or running an errand. Make sure you arrive 10 minutes before class starts.
Step 3: Once you’re inside
Come in, take off your shoes right away, and place them neatly in the hallway.
The first door in the hallway is the restroom. Around the corner on the left, you’ll find the women’s and men’s locker rooms.
You can hang up your coat there, get changed if you still need to, and if you feel like it, walk a little way into the gym to watch the previous class, or tell the trainer it’s your first time.
From that moment on, you’re no longer anonymous: the trainer knows you’re there, keeps an eye on you, and helps you pick out the right loaner gear.
Step 4: Class begins
Class starts with a warm-up to get your heart rate up and your whole body warm and loose. You don’t need any skills for that. Just join in.
Then it’s time for the sport itself. You’ll learn the basics: how to stand, how a jab works, and why your hands belong next to your chin instead of down by your hips.
You’ll combine kicks and punches on the bag while a partner holds it for you. Someone who also walked in for the first time once. We regularly mix in bodyweight exercises that make your whole body stronger.
A class lasts fifty minutes (sometimes it runs ten minutes over, depending on the trainer and the moment), and it flies by because your mind has no room for boredom or anything else. You’re focused on technique and blowing off steam. That’s kickboxing’s best-kept secret: it’s the best way to truly switch off after work.
We often finish with stretches. Stretching works best when you’re warm, and after all that tension, it helps your muscles loosen up and lengthen again. Time to unwind.
Are we going to spar/fight? No
The question everyone has but nobody dares to ask: no, you definitely won’t spar during your trial class. Sparring only happens in Technique classes. We won’t sign you up for those.
Most of our members only do bag work, so they never hit each other. The bag is the only thing taking a beating.
Step 5: Time to head home
You’ll head home wiped out, and tomorrow you’ll be sore in places you never even knew existed. That’s part of the deal.
But after one class, you still won’t know whether kickboxing is for you. You’ll know after three. That’s why we give you three, for free, with no fine print.
The first time is honestly a bit of a survival mission. Your brain is working overtime, and no matter how fit you were, your body isn’t used to this kind of workout. But just watch: our members and trainers will give you nothing but encouragement. The only person in the gym giving you a hard time might be you, frustrated that you couldn’t punch as hard as you wanted or keep up with the combinations.
Coming back will fix all of that.
You don’t adapt the workout. Your body adapts.
Your progress in those first few classes is exponential, so if you pay attention to your own improvement, you’ll see a huge leap every time. And that’ll leave you wanting more.
Meanwhile, your body builds the right kind of fitness, you understand the technique better and quickly start hitting ten times harder, and soon you only need a few words to understand a combination.
