Who I am
Hi, I’m Kevin. In 2026, Remy and I took over the gym above Albert Heijn in Weesp and gave it a name of its own: De Vechtclub. On weekdays, I teach three early morning bag work classes, so I might be the one handing you your gloves at eight or nine in the morning. I didn’t start kickboxing until I was 27, so I know exactly what it’s like to start from scratch as an adult. Expect tough workouts, with plenty of encouragement to push yourself just a little harder. But unless the drill is to just smash away, I’ll always try to sharpen your technique too. Five good kicks beat twenty bad ones. See you on the mat!
My kickboxing journey
I started kickboxing in 2010 and trained for eight years with Jamal Karrouche, the trainer of Levi Rigters, back then at Kops Gym. I was already 27, so I got a pretty late start, but I was all in from day one. I helped my training partner there set up Eastbound Gym and taught there for three years. After that, I trained at several places in Weesp, followed by another two years at Vos Gym Amsterdam under Ivan Hippolyte and Jascha Hausel. At 40, I fought and won a bout representing them. A true bucket list moment for me. Then, through ClassPass, I took classes at more than twenty different gyms in 2024, simply because I was curious about how other people taught and wanted to fine-tune my own technique. Every trainer focuses on something different, after all. Three gyms really stood out to me: Ettaki Gym by Oussama Ettaki, Gym Royale by Paul Lamoth and Spally's by Leroy Spalburg. And I still love training at all three. Starting in 2022, I also taught at The Kickboxing Society, the chain founded by Rico Verhoeven, where I was trained by his coach Dennis Krauweel. When the chain left Weesp in 2026, Remy and I took over the location and gave it our own spin and a name of its own: De Vechtclub.
